In the hustle and bustle of downtown Cleveland, nestled on the corner of Broad St & Central Ave is a store unlike any other. Project Free 2 Fly was born out of the desire to promote women in the community of Cleveland through sewing and crafting unique goods. As you turn the corner on to Broad St you can see a group of women hard at work crafting beautiful handbags, earrings, wallets, and many other items. These items can be purchased in the attached store front along with many other artisanal goods crafted in the area. The atmosphere of Project Free 2 Fly is fresh and welcoming. Soft music plays as you peruse possible gifts for a friend or something special to accessorize with. There is something for everyone at Project Free 2 Fly! From handmade goat soaps to bow ties to home decor and everything in between.
What makes Project Free 2 Fly so special is the mission behind it. Each purchase goes back into the community and back into the organization. The women employed at Project Free 2 Fly come from all walks of life and have been referred by other organizations in the community such as Family Promise, Foundation House, and Women at the Well. The mission of Free 2 Fly is to help women work to overcome life’s obstacles through structure, work, and goal setting. These women are then given the tools to provide for their families, learn valuable life skills, and gain confidence that comes from hard work and support.
Project Free 2 Fly is the brainchild of Hailey Johnston. As a student at Lee University, she fell in love with the atmosphere and sense of community in Cleveland. She got the idea for Project Free 2 Fly as she searched for a way to marry her love of sewing with her love of mission work. In April 2014 Project Free 2 Fly launched as a workspace with an online presence only. After much success online, Free 2 Fly was able to open a physical space in downtown Cleveland in July 2016 with a recent expansion in August 2017.
In addition to a physical storefront and online boutique, Free 2 Fly hosts several fundraising events throughout the year. Upcoming is the fall favorite Bird & Barn event at Black Fox Farms Thursday October 26th from 10 am to 8 pm. Tickets are on sale now!
